John was born in Scotland in 1955 and emigrated to Canada in 1967. He graduated from Oak Bay High School in 1973 and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Victoria in 1977.
Between 1977 and 1979 John attended the University of Victoria’s School of Public Administration working on a Master’s Degree when he changed focus and enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Windsor in Ontario
Returning to Victoria in 1982, John articled with the then Harman, Wilson & Company, and practiced with that firm until 1987 when he established his own practice which he ran for the ensuing 20 years. After five years at Straith & Company John left to found Dogwood Law Corporation along with Bill MacDonald.
John’s practice has been varied including real estate development; wills & estates; commercial, construction, and corporate law & litigation in respect of those areas. A mediator as well as a litigator, John’s practice focuses on problem solving and dispute resolution.
John is a trusted, skillful, passionate and practical counsel, who enjoys solving complex, polycentric, multi-party disputes. John also has a varied solicitor’s practice viewing his education and experiences as both a barrister and a solicitor as being complementary and essential to one another. Both Bill and John are trained mediators, being proficient in, and promoters of, alternate dispute resolution (ADR) methods.
